Encounter in the Community: A Teachable Moment

Advocating for Children's Health: Breaking the Stigma Around Medical Marijuana

ree

Recently, while setting up our tent to educate the public about the benefits of medical cannabis, we encountered resistance from a co-owner who declared, “You can’t put that tent up here, I am for the children… and I am not for weed.” Despite informing him that US420DOC is a medical office focused on educating the public about the therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana, he reiterated his stance, claiming he knew all about it.

In an attempt to find common ground, we asked if he knew any children with ADHD or autism. His response was dismissive: “I am for the children.

This interaction underscores a significant challenge: the persistent stigma around medical marijuana, even when it can potentially improve the lives of children with conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, or epileptic seizures.

The Benefits of Medical Marijuana for Children

Medical marijuana is increasingly recognized for its therapeutic benefits for various pediatric conditions by the following organizations:

  • American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

  • American Public Health Association (APHA)

  • American Medical Association (AMA)

  • American Nurses Association (ANA)

  • American Academy of Neurology (AAN)

  • National Multiple Sclerosis Society

  • Epilepsy Foundation

Here's how medical cannabis can help:

1. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD):

   - Behavioral Improvement: Studies suggest that medical cannabis can help reduce self-injurious behavior and aggressive outbursts in children with ASD.

   - Anxiety Reduction: It can alleviate anxiety and improve social interactions, enhancing the overall quality of life for children and their families.

2. ADHD:

   - Attention and Focus: Certain cannabinoids may help improve focus and attention in

children with ADHD.

   - Reducing Hyperactivity: It can also help in reducing hyperactive behavior, making daily activities and learning more manageable.

3. Seizures and Epilepsy:

   - Seizure Control: Medical marijuana, particularly CBD, has been shown to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in children with epilepsy.

   - Improved Quality of Life: By controlling seizures, children can engage more fully in daily activities, leading to a better quality of life.

Addressing the Stigma: Education and Awareness

The key to changing perceptions lies in education and awareness. Here’s how we can work together to break the stigma:

- Community Outreach: Continue organizing educational events to inform the public about the benefits and safe use of medical marijuana.

- Personal Stories: Share success stories from families who have seen positive outcomes with medical marijuana treatment.

- Scientific Evidence: Highlight research and studies that support the use of medical marijuana for pediatric conditions.

Conclusion

While encounters like the one described highlight the challenges we face, they also motivate us to continue our mission. By educating the public and advocating for children’s health, we can break the stigma and open doors to new, effective treatments for children in need.
